Visual Discrimination
The ability to sort and interpret visual information, or “visual discrimination,” is developed as young eyes learn to see the similarities and differences in colors, patterns, objects and shapes. Visual discrimination is a skill that takes time, practice and exposure to lots of different visual stimuli to develop. The 2-IN-1 FIREFLY MOBILE was designed to encourage baby’s visual development without being overstimulating. While visual stimulation is important, it’s also essential not to overstimulate young eyes—visual information overload can actually cause babies to lose engagement and stare into space. When little ones are young, they can only focus on objects and movement within about eight inches of their eyes, and they are particularly sensitive to light. The 2-IN-1 FIREFLY MOBILE, with its soft lights and gentle movement, is designed to hang within baby’s visual field and capture the attention of little eyes in a soothing and encouraging way. The soothing twinkle lights on the mobile’s base, and the soft colors and dim lighting provide plenty to see while still being visually gentle for young eyes.

Eye Tracking
When babies are first born, they can’t see very far and their eye movements are often random and uncoordinated. Engaging in fun experiences like watching the lights and the movement of the 2-IN-1 FIREFLY MOBILE encourage babies to focus and visually follow movements. This can help strengthen eye muscles and, over time, result in smooth, more efficient eye movement. Developing smooth eye movements is an important foundation for learning later skills like reading, writing and drawing.

Soothing & comforting
The transition from wide awake to fast asleep can be difficult for some young children. The soft lights and gentle melodies of the 2-IN-1 FIREFLY MOBILE may help you set a routine that becomes part of your child’s wind-down time and may help her self-calm and feel comfortable, safe and secure. When stressed, all humans find they are less able to think and function clearly. It is important to set patterns of behavior so a baby learns to self calm more easily, and providing gentle and nurturing environments at an early age can help.

Anticipation & Prediction
As the glowing lights on the 2-IN-1 FIREFLY MOBILE fade and flash, there is something reassuring and familiar for little ones—they begin to understand that the lights will flash again! Awareness that things happen in a sequence is the beginnings of understanding order and what comes next. When the glowing lights continue to flash, baby learns that one blink follows the other. As children watch the action of a toy, they begin to recognize its pattern, and over time start to predict actions to come. Anticipation & Prediction is the same skill that children use later when they learn to predict things as simple as after dinner is bedtime and the sun comes up in the morning.

Learn more—together!
Want to join the fun? Playing with your child can boost his learning, and it gives him more time to bond with you! Try these simple tips to enhance your child’s play experience:

  • Hum the songs of the 2-IN-1 FIREFLY MOBILE to baby at other times of the day. As she recognizes these melodies and they become familiar, they may comfort her while reinforcing memory skills.
  • Use the music and make your own words to sing along.
  • If possible, change the side of the crib where the light soother hangs to encourage baby to turn her head in her crib the other way. This ensures little muscles and eyes develop equally on each side.
